The Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH), in a unique partnership with Creative Scotland and nine industry-sector partners, has a new programme of Creative Economy Engagement Fellowships that will address the challenges of fragmentation across the Scottish creative economy. As part of this programme, GSA wish to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Creative Economy to a new full time post on a fixed term contract for six months. The post will be based in the Glasgow School of Art, Creative Campus, Highlands & Islands and Glasgow Campus. The successful candidate will have an established research focus in the creative economy, Additionally, the candidate will ideally possess direct expertise in design innovation and community engagement, preferably in a non-metropolitan context. Preference will be shown for applicants with an understanding of the challenges of the creative industries, particularly in the Crafts sector in the Highlands and Islands (H&I) region, in the context of longstanding economic issues in the region with low levels of entrepreneurialism, start-ups and innovation.  These regional challenges include the dispersed working communities and technological infrastructure of the region, which can limit opportunities in the creative economy. The Fellow’s research into the craft industry in the region will build on the work of the existing AHRC-funded ‘Design Innovation for New Growth’ (DING) project at GSA, which propagates design as a strategy for business growth and innovation with new audiences in the Highlands and Islands (H&I) region.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct this programme of research, with the guidance of Dr Lynn-Sayers McHattie (Design Director, The Innovation School), and colleagues from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). The industry partner Highland and Islands Enterprise enhances the Fellowship through giving access to a range of diverse evidence/datasets and extensive networks/ contacts, and builds on GSA’s existing links with the organisation. The appointee will work closely with the cohort of two other Creative Economy Fellows co-ordinated by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities’ Creative Economy Hub to produce a final report.

Applicants would normally be expected to hold a PhD and have a track record of research and publication in this general area. A first degree in a design related discipline would be advantageous. Successful applicants would also be expected to travel regularly to, or be located nearby, The GSA Highlands & Islands campus at Altyre, near Forres.
