Applications are invited for an Engagement Assistant (1.0 FTE), in the Archives and Collections department.
The Glasgow School of Art is looking for a dynamic, pro-active and creative Engagement Assistant to join the Archives and Collections team which looks after and makes accessible the School’s Archives and Collections, a rich resource for the study of art, design, architecture and art education.
This is a new role which will support the work of the team to increase the audience for, and the profile and use of, the GSA’s heritage collections at The Whisky Bond and the recently re-opened museum on campus, as well as through online platforms, exhibitions, loans, tours, projects and handling sessions.
The collections consist of approximately 5000 individual objects, around 100 deposited archive collections and 25,000 items in the GSA institutional archive, illustrating the people, history and buildings of the institution and the development of its teaching practices since it was established in 1845. The collections, which include works on paper, furniture, sculpture, ceramics, fine art and metalwork, also have the potential to inspire creativity, provoke response and unlock hidden narratives of interest to the contemporary community of users they serve.
The ideal candidate will be adept at and enthusiastic about creating content for our website and social media platforms (Instagram, and X) and be interested in developing new channels, like TikTok, to reach new audiences. They will also require an eye for detail, in order to handle and condition-check objects, and draft and prepare paperwork and interpretation to support our exhibitions and engagement activities. Experience and understanding of community and student engagement would be ideal, as well as a flexible and can-do attitude as the post will be a mixture of hands-on work in the museum, stores and reading room, front-facing customer engagement, and more focussed desk-based tasks, in an ever-changing, fast-paced and creative environment.
If this sounds like you, we would be delighted to hear from you.
